چکیده

Alcaligenes xylosoxidans, formerly known as Achromobacter xylosoxidans is a nonfermenting gram-negative rod, that is increasingly been identified as a pathogen in the last decade. Nowadays the name commonly accepted for correct taxonomy is Achromobacter xylosoxidans. It has been isolated from several aqueous environmental sources, some of which have been associated with nosocomial outbreaks of infections. Infections caused by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans have been documented in patients with a variety of indwelling devices, but it has been shown as a causing disease bacteria in other cases without risk factors (previous surgery or catheter carrier). It could be also encountered in all kind of organs and body systems, so this microorganism is acquiring major importance in recent years.

Background and Objective: Alcaligenes sp. is a non-fermentative Gram-negative bacillus, which causes nosocomial infections, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and may be confused with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Alcaligenes infections usually are not well identified and due to possible errors and similarities with Pseudomonas, their diagnosis with phenotypic tests is not suffici...

Alcaligenes xylosoxidans bacteremia: clinical features and microbiological characteristics of isolates.

Bacteremia caused by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans is rare. Between 1999 and 2002, 12 cases of bacteremia caused by A. xylosoxidans were diagnosed at a tertiary referral center in central Taiwan. The clinical features of these patients and the antimicrobial susceptibilities and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern of their blood isolates were studied. All infections were acquired nosocomi...
